Punjab’s ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ Programme: A Step Towards Affordable Housing

Apni-Chat-Apna-Ghar-Scheme

The Punjab government has taken a groundbreaking initiative with the launch of the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ programme, aimed at addressing housing challenges for deserving citizens. Led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the programme underscores a commitment to making affordable housing a reality.

Key Features of the Program:

1. Affordable Plots for Deserving Families

The programme begins by allotting three-marla plots to eligible citizens. The first phase targets the Christian community, starting with 666 plots in Chishtian. This inclusive approach ensures that housing benefits reach underprivileged groups across the province.

2. Interest-Free Loans for Housing

In a first for Pakistan, the programme offers interest-free loans of up to PKR 1.5 million for constructing homes. These loans can be repaid in easy monthly installments of PKR 14,000, enabling even low-income families to build their dream homes without financial strain.

  • Urban Areas: Loans support houses up to 5 marlas.
  • Rural Areas: Loans extend to houses up to 10 marlas.
3. Monthly Balloting for Transparency

To ensure fairness, plots and loans are allocated through a monthly balloting system. The Punjab government’s focus on transparency has encouraged over 500,000 applications, reflecting the public’s trust in the initiative.

4. Government-Backed Subsidies

Private housing schemes also play a role, with the government providing subsidies of up to PKR 1 million per house. This partnership strengthens housing access for more citizens.

5. Major Urban Developments

In cities, the programme plans the construction of four-story flats on government land. These units will be distributed through a lottery system and made available on easy installment plans, further addressing the urban housing crisis.
