Introduction:
The Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) project, under the leadership of Commissioner Rawalpindi Division/Liaquat Ali Chatha and Director-General Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Saf Anwar Jappa, has gained immense importance for the city of Rawalpindi. A consultation session was conducted, involving stakeholders like the President of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of Bus and Transport Union, President of Rawat Industrial Estate, and representatives from the Traders Association of Rawalpindi. This meeting aimed to emphasize the significance of the RRR project and discuss its priority-based development.
Consultation and Expertise:
Commissioner Rawalpindi highlighted that the RDA has entered into an agreement with Botek Bogazici Musavirlik Anonim Sirketi, a Turkish consulting engineering company, for third-party validation services in determining the optimal route for the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR). The consultants, also known as Botek JV, were tasked with validating the existing proposals and recommending the best route for RRR, focusing on Package I, which spans 38.3 kilometers and extends from Bhan Syedabad to Thalian Interchange (M-2). They further suggested exploring two options: detailed study with the National Highway Authority (Package 2), utilizing M-2 and M-1, or seeking a new route connecting Islamabad Airport to RRR via Sangjani (N-5), both of which intersect with Margalla Avenue and M-1.
Project Highlights:
Botek JV presented their recommendations to the Project Director and DG-RDA. They proposed an optimal route for Package I of RRR, spanning 38.3 kilometers from Bhan Syedabad to Thalian Interchange (M-2). Moreover, they suggested investigating two options for Package 2: utilizing M-2 and M-1 based on NHA consultation, or exploring a new route that integrates Islamabad Airport through a new road, ultimately connecting to RRR via Sangjani and Margalla Avenue. In both scenarios, the Margalla Avenue is strategically linked to M-1.
Significance and Impacts:
The Rawalpindi Ring Road project, once completed, is set to offer numerous benefits to Rawalpindi city and its residents. The carefully planned route will enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and facilitate efficient transportation for both commuters and businesses. The consultation process with various stakeholders ensures that the project is aligned with the city’s development needs and priorities.
